Minding Our Physical and Mental Health
Hi Everyone! We hope you are all keeping as well as possible during this time. We know lots of children are working hard on schoolwork and also using their time to exercise, bake, create art and spend quality time with their families. Here are some other ideas to pass the time, which focus on our physical and mental health.
Exercise
- Lots of you have already been doing this one: Joe Wicks Live P.E workouts. If you can't watch it live or you miss it he puts them up on his youtube channel after: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ
- Irish Life Health have put together a six-week, couch to 3km programme for kids. It gives daily plans to build up stamina. See it here: https://www.irishlifehealth.ie/fitnesschallenge/stay-active
- The famous Kilkenny hurler T.J Reid is offering free P.E and skills lessons live from his gym every Tuesday and Thursday at 12 noon. These can also be watched afterwards. See: https://www.facebook.com/TJReidFitness/
- Not exactly exercise but still good for the mind is this colouring book with GAA heroes. It can be downloaded for free here: https://www.damienquinndraws.com/copy-of-limerick-colouring-book.
- Choose one or two skills a week to perfect in a sport you play or a new sport e.g. handpassing, soloing, roll lifting, dribbling. Practise every day for the week. Complete minute time trials where someone counts how many you do in a minute. Do this three times a day and keep trying to beat your score.
- Practise on your less dominant hand and foot every day(e.g. striking the ball, kicking, handpassing, throwing) to make it as good as your dominant hand or foot.
- If you have a younger brother or sister, teach them a skill or a sport.
- Increase your speed by timing your sprint (measure 100m on the road or in the garden) and trying to beat it daily.
- Create a circuit or obstacle course for the whole family to complete.
- Have a family penalty shoot out or game of rounders.
- Practise less common athletic skills like the long jump, shot putt (you can use a small ball) and javelin throw (use any long object that you can throw or make your own javelin!)
- Go Noodle website is free and does not require a sign up. It has many workouts, stretches, funny dances, Zumba, mindfulness etc. for all ages. See: https://family.gonoodle.com/
-Cosmic yoga is an excellent website for guided yoga based on a story: https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga

Mental Wellness
- Don't listen to fake news and stories!
- Complete a random act of kindness every day for someone in your family (in person) or a friend or relative (virtually). Make a bank of ideas and then choose one to do each day. Record what you have done. :)
- Write down something you are grateful for/a happy memory or experience, once a day or week on a sticky note or a small piece of paper. Put it into an empty jar or envelope. Read back on them at the end of the week or month.
- Complete mindful colouring. There are many of these to be found online for example the Twinkl website has lots.
- Mullingar's very own Bressie or Niall Breslin will be posting mindfulness classes for kids on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5pm on his Instagram live and posting them on Facebook after. You do not need a facebook or instagram to watch these as his pages are public.
- Talk to an adult or sibling if something is worrying you. Don't bottle it up inside. Writing it down on paper or drawing it can also help.
- Be kind to others but also yourself. Do at least one thing you love every day!

Stay safe and stay at home :)

Simple Arts and Crafts Ideas

Hi Parents/Guardians and Children! Happy Mother's Day! We hope you continue to keep safe and well during this difficult time. A reminder that the children's books are available to collect at the school from 11.00 am to 6.00 pm tomorrow, Monday (23/03/2020). Please do not bring the children when collecting the books and observe social distancing. Teachers will also assign some work and there will be more information about this with the books. This work is to act as a guide and not intended to create any extra pressure or stress on families. Do what you can.

If you are looking for extra ideas for apps or websites the website http://www.coolappsforschools.com/ is an excellent one which divides apps/websites based on age and subject area. It is run by a member of the PDST (Professional Development Service For Teachers) Digital Strategies team. It also has a brilliant Facebook Page.

Dublin Zoo have also just started a lovely activity series where they release an activity workbook, each weekday, on an animal in the zoo. It may be nice for the children to check in each day to see what the animal is! See https://www.dublinzoo.ie/news/dublinzoofun/fbclid=IwAR1km6YluvQzcptTRF5sOd_J0I8IuVo9tWgjgeeK1t5k3htakhjyjG6gVac.

On the website here, we will post some ideas in relation to arts and crafts, wellness, games and exercise over the coming days/weeks. These are all very important at this time.

Here is a list of possible art and craft ideas which require very little materials, little to no screen time (apart from looking up ideas) and most can be modified for all age groups.
Children can read this list themselves or ask a sibling/parent to read it for them:
  • Create a dolls house/village/shop using cardboard boxes.
  • Create a colour by number worksheet to test the concentration of another family member!
  • Create your own cartoon. You will need to create a background/backdrop, characters (or use characters you already have e.g. Lego people, barbie etc.), write a script and give parts to different people in the family. Record it, edit it and then watch it or send it to a friend/cousin/neighbour to watch.
  • Design a calendar. Decide on a theme (e.g. animals, flowers, sports etc.) Paper calendars usually have a picture in landscape position above the month. The month is separated into days in little rectangles below. Look up ideas online or ask an adult if you are unsure of the layout.
  • Illustrate a cartoon for each day to show what you did at home during this time. Younger children can just draw the pictures, older children can add speech bubbles and captions. You can use it to share your experiences with the class when you get back or maybe it will be published in a hundred years time and become a part of history! :)
  • Alternatively, you could simply illustrate and write about each day, like a journal or memoir. Don't forget to add a date. It will be very interesting to read back on in the future.
  • Design your own cookbook with your favourite recipes. You could include the favourite recipes of your family members too. Maybe call a family member or granny or granddad and ask them about their favourite recipe! Illustrate with beautiful pictures. (Don't forget to try making them too!)
  • Ask someone in your family or someone on skype or video call to sit still and draw a portrait of them (Don't take too long! :)).
  • Draw the plans for your dream home.
  • Sketch the plans for a new toy that hasn't been created yet or an improvement on a toy or device you already have. Make a model of it with recyclable materials if possible.
  • Use old clothes (always ask first!!) to make something new. e.g. updating an old t-shirt or customising new silly socks.
  • Design a piece of clothing or an outfit using recyclable materials (see Junk Kouture images for inspiration).
  • Design a board game! It could be simple like an updated version of snakes and ladders or something new. Create the rules and then play it as a family.
  • Choose one object in the house and sketch it in detail e.g. a fruit bowl, your favourite room, your favourite picture, the view from a certain window.
  • Design a card and give it to someone in the house if they need cheering up. :)
  • Draw your favourite memory from school this year.
  • Design your ideal jersey.
  • Create a crest for your family (like a crest on a jersey).

We hope you get to try some of these and get hours of fun! Mind yourselves and we will see you soon.

19th March 2020

Hey everyone. Hope you're keeping well during this uncertain time. Over the coming weeks we will be posting some nice activities that you can do with your children at home. With the weather looking nice at the moment here are some gymnastics activities that you might like to try out. Have a go at some rolls, balances and movements.

Further success in the 'Someone Like Me' art competition December 5th 2018

There was great excitement this week as the awards ceremony for the 'Someone Like Me' art took place In City Hall, Dublin. Five students represented their school and classmates with distinction on the day, accompanied by Mr Butler and Mrs Staunton.
